Over here, while we pack and sort and such, we're also waiting for news of the arrival of another baby girl. My dear friend will have her first baby any day now.

And not too long ago we were invited to her baby shower.

My older daughter really wanted to come, and luckily there was a life-long friend in attendance, since the "oohing" and "ahhing" over teeny tiny baby things lost it's charm for this seven-year-old pretty quickly. (The cupcakes, on the other hand, were fascinating to the last bite.)

I wanted to make a gift but strangely, despite being invited at least a month in advance, the party snuck up on me. So I needed something great and fast. No knitted booties. No baby quilts. And sadly, no sweaters.

I had about one afternoon and plenty of fabric in my stash to spare. One obvious solution was my modified version of the Messy Kid Bib by Oliver + S: awesome in every way, super quick to make, and utterly useful.

I made a bunch (four or five?) and a handy little gift bag (which could very easily end up being even more useful than the bibs—I use mine to stow diapers and wipes, snacks, knitting projects, you know, whatever needs to be collected).

Hopefully they'll see lots of mess—for years to come!

A Make-Again Pattern

I love new patterns. So much so that I usually can't resist starting something new (or many, many somethings) even with other unfinished projects clambering for my attention.

But I also have a few patterns that I come back to again and again because they just work so brilliantly.

Manda Ruth by Jane Richmond is one of those.

Here's the yellow version I made for the baby last year:

Of course she's completely outgrown it (funny how that happens) so I really want to start on a new one for her.

And right now I'm leaning toward some non-baby colors, such as:

Right now we're still in the labor-intense, not-so-much-fun, man-we-have-a-lot-of-stuff phase of this moving thing but in my mind I've already moved on to the far more enjoyable, crafting aspect.

So these days, when I'm not sorting things into "pack," "goodwill," and "garbage" piles, I search out fun home-related projects to look forward to.

A Little Luxe

My mom lives in Houston, where I hear it's hot and humid most of the year. But that doesn't stop her from knitting—a lot. True, my kids are the lucky recipients of a good number of her handmade sweaters, but she does knit for herself too.

For a while after she moved to Texas (from the Midwest) she seemed to adjust her knitting style to the climate, focusing mostly on lightweight fibers and straying towards wool jackets only occasionally.

But I think sometimes she just can't resist a pattern—even if it means that she'll only be able to wear the finished sweater when she's visiting me or one of my brothers.

Which is pretty much how she came to make this Chambord Truffle by Army of Knitters. And let me tell you, it's seriously gorgeous.

She says it's a really easy knit, and even though the yarn used by the designer (and suggested in the pattern) costs a mint, my mom swears it's worth every penny (some yarn is like that, isn't it?).

I think it's so great that she made such a lovely sweater for herself—something we should all do more often I imagine.

Alright. So this week, it's all about pretending I have enough time to make something as adorable as this. {As usual} there is a ton of activity around here, and I feel almost super human just getting dinner on the table these days.

However, if things were different, I would sit quietly and make a little community of these pixies (the pdf pattern can be found here, just in case your days are different):

A Simple Quilt

My younger brother welcomed his first baby into the world just last week. I haven't gotten to meet Miss Hartley yet, but I hear she's simply gorgeous, brilliant, and a good sleeper to boot!

I always try to make gifts for the new babies in our lives, and in this case I had the chance to collaborate with my mom, which made the project even more fun.

My sister-in-law asked for a quilt to match the nursery decór, which of course we were happy to provide. And because of the style of the fabric she chose, simple seemed the way to go.

Still, we wanted it to be special. So we decided to hand quilt it. That's special, right?

At first we thought we'd quilt around each animal, but that proved to be a bit overly ambitious so we settled on all of the bears. (This fabric is called Brown Bear, Brown Bear, from the book Brown Bear, Brown Bear, What Do You See? by Eric Carle.) Which turned out super cute, if I do say so myself.

Then with a simple rainbow confetti on the back and a bright red binding we were all set.

Sometimes a simple project is just the thing, don't you think?

Sewing for Boys

So guess what arrived on my doorstep the other day. A copy of Sewing for Boys: 24 Projects to Create a Handmade Wardrobe from Patterns by Figgy's.

I love Patterns by Figgy's, and not just because they let my son model for the Dapper Dillingers pattern last spring. And not just because the patterns are well written and easy to follow. I also love them because the ladies behind the company are so, so nice.

And then of course there's that totally cool style of theirs. Just look at these adorable patterns:

As anyone with boys knows, it's not always easy to find patterns that are cool enough to pass their high level of scrutiny. Heck, it's been hard to find patterns for boys at all until recently.

This book delivers 24 awesome patterns in one fell swoop.

I don't have this fabulous book in the shop yet since I'm only adding new items to the new site (which is poking right along) but you can pick it up here until I have the new site up (hopefully in the next couple weeks).

Trying Something New

Do any of you homeschool?

We had to take my older daughter out of her beloved school (on 20 rural, wooded acres, with goats even!) for a variety of reasons, none of which was dissatisfaction of any kind (except perhaps the daily commute). And we've decided to homeschool until we've worked out what to do next.

She's taking it brilliantly. I'm a little more, um, shaky.

Around here we have a sort of relaxed way of moving through the day. For example, a fair number of days this summer the kids stayed in their swimsuits from dawn (ok, 8:30-ish) to dusk (remember, during summer that's around 9:00 pm). And that's cool with me. So I was a little concerned that school would suddenly become, well, a lot of that.

And who knows, maybe it will eventually be a fly-the-seat-of-our-pants sort of thing, but for now, I've devised a schedule. Oh, and let me tell you, that's the kind of thing my daughter really, really likes.

Included in this yet-to-be-tested schedule is...(dum da da dum...) craft hour. Daily. Yep, an hour of crafts, art, projects, what have you every single day.

I figured it would be a good way to keep my sanity.

Here's the best part: what do you suppose my sweet, amazing, brilliant, and fabulous-in-every-way seven-year-old wanted to try first?

Knitting!

Gah! (happy, happy!)

So did I hesitate? Nope. And here she is, concentrating very hard on a scarf for her baby sister. (How cute is that?)

Next she plans to make a sweater for her brother.

Oh my goodness. Now this is a project I can relate to (not actually accomplish, mind you). Have any of you read the awesome blog The Sew Weekly?

Well, Mena Trott decided a couple years ago to sew all her own clothes (with a few minor exceptions). Isn't that a lovely idea? {She calls it the slow clothes movement and I totally get that. As a slow food enthusiast, I can heartily say I'm a proponent of slow in all possible forms.} And, lucky for us, she's been documenting this sewing adventure on her blog, where this week's inspiration is found.

I think someone at Ikea has been spying on me.

We've got a growing family and a house that stubbornly refuses to get any larger, so we've been trying to get creative about how we use our space.

And what do you know? The latest Ikea catalog is all about transforming small spaces.

True, true, Ikea has pretty much always been the best source for outfitting small spaces in style—without breaking the bank—but this particular catalog really got my attention.

I love this space because I'm always stumped by big open spaces without defining walls. And this one—I love the trio of funky lamps! Kinda unrelated, but how cute is it that in these two, it's the papas who are comforting the babies? And this kitchen is awesome, and itty bitty!

And then, how about this super cute duvet? It won't change the way you use your space, but it's pretty darn cute!

It looks like someone decided to take a month off from blogging. Wish I could say it was because I was kicking back with a tall glass of lemonade, lazily reading a fabulous summertime novel, but alas, no. I actually don't have any explanation at all. It's just summer. And it's busy, busy, busy (isn't summer supposed to be relaxing, relaxing, relaxing?)!

One of the many lovely things we did during that little blogging hiatus is visit four different parks around Portland that are large enough to have hiking trails within their boundaries. And what did we take on our adventures? The super awesome Naturlist's Scavenger Hunt Bag from Meg's Growing Up Sew Liberated.

And let me tell you, they were put to good use. We collected a number of treasures, which all nestled comfortably beside snack bags and canteens.

This is a fabulous pattern in a fabulous book, which I'm finally going to have in the shop as soon as the new site is up (yay!). Oh, Summer!

This happens to me every year. I always expect summer to be lazy and relaxing—and it is, in some ways—but it never fails to be busy in it's own way.

We haven't stopped moving since the kids got out of school! And despite my best laid plans, I haven't spent a single moment with my sewing machine. So those unfinished sundresses will be for...hmm. Next year?

One little crafty project my older daughter and I have started on is some super darling fairy dolls, inspired by this post over on Making it Lovely. Here's Nicole's:

Ours are still little more than floss-covered wire, but we're slowly turning them into magical little beings.

One of us is very busy learning the delicate art of walking on uneven ground in order to pluck all the blooms from every peony plant in the backyard:

And all of us are being utterly entertained by our latest little brood, who, technically, were this size about a month ago:

Yes, there is A LOT going on behind the scenes over here, some good (a 4th of July rodeo! park play dates! strawberry picking!), some really not so good (a trip to the beach ruined by a dying transmission, a disabled web site for nearly two weeks, major life decisions demanding attention), and some very, very exciting (a whole new web site on its way, the arrival of some amazing quilt patterns from down under). Let's just say that this summer isn't going to be lazy either.

Ok, gotta run—I've got two flats of strawberries calling me from the kitchen, an embroidery project begging to be finished up, and some seriously glorious weather to enjoy.

A Little Simplicity

Sometimes I just love an intricate pattern. Don't you? Something that challenges my craft-ability. Something that really makes me think and demands my full attention. Those are the kind of projects that I imagine protect us from dementia in old age. Workouts for our brains, you know?

Finding Time

So I'm wondering, do any of you ever feel like no matter how hard you look, you just can't find any time for crafting (or, fill in the blank with your favorite down-time activity)? I mean, it's not just me, right?

Before busy baby Norah joined the family I was pretty good at locating an hour or two here and there for myself. Granted, I often used that time to make stuff for my kids, but it was definitely a choice I was making (which is not how I see laundry, mopping, or cleaning up the kitchen).

But these days, I feel like I could look my day up and down and never happen upon an extra 20 minutes.

So, clearly, I need to stop looking and start making! I've found some great advice about making time for yourself (to knit, sew, read, whatever) and thought I'd pass it on. Just in case your day isn't as flush with free time as you'd like either!

I love this post on A Little Hut. Particularly the idea of asking for free time as a gift. Brilliant.

In this post on Down to Earth, Rhonda makes a great point about feeling guilty when we take time for crafting (or rather, not feeling guilty).

This post on Knitting Daily has some great ideas about getting organized and inspired, which will naturally lead to more time for crafts...right?

Divine Caroline offers a few practical tips for sewing in this post.

And perhaps my favorite post about making time for crafts is over on Whipstitch. {I think I threw my fist in the air with a renewed sense of power after reading it. I'm worth it! Good stuff.}

I've just added some new patterns to the shop from Brooklyn Tweed and I'm finding myself a bit, um, distracted by them.

See, it's (finally!) summer here and so I was thinking I'd focus on sewing sundresses and board shorts (check out Rae's—so cute!), sun hats and beach blankets. Maybe do a little summer knitting with the luvinthemommyhood knit-along. You know, good, summery crafts.

Portland is in full bloom right now and let me tell you, it's a lovely sight.

Really, I almost stopped at a house with the most gorgeous red poppies I have ever seen just so I could find out where they came from.

And you should see my neighbor's pale pink peonies! Simply beautiful.

And then there is the absolutely perfect yellow rose in our front yard. The poor bush needs a little more care than it has been getting {ahem} but despite the neglect it is producing the most luscious yellow blooms on our street.

So, why all the ramblings about flowers, you might ask. Well, I don't know about you, but I am remarkably influenced by color. Indeed. I've been known (on countless occasions, in fact) to choose yarn for a project based entirely on color (with utter disregard for other important qualities, like weight). Yep. And I've been trolling fabric shops for years looking for that perfect yellow that my darling rose bush produces with such ease.

And right now I walk around the city and think up projects based on the color of flowers! You'd think I'd take that happy flower appreciation and spend a little time with my garden, but instead my head is swirling with potential dresses for the girls in pale-peony-pink, new curtains for the family room in front-yard-rose-yellow, and a lightweight summer sweater in perfect-poppy-red. What can I say?

I'm thinking that my closet is sorely lacking in completely awesome, lightweight summer tunics. Good thing I know just how to fix that!

Ok, so usually I sew for my kids. A couple reasons: 1) Kids patterns are often so, so cute. 2) Everything looks good on my cute kids (with a few minor, nothing-could-save-them mama-made-failures). Hmm, and ok, one more: 3) I'm a little chicken to sew for myself.

However, I'm feeling quite brave these days and ready for a new infusion of awesomeness in my own wardrobe, so I've been surfing Pinterest for inspiration. And of course, there's plenty. Here are some of my favorite tunics that I will dutifully try to replicate in some fashion this summer...

I had a very stittchy weekend—some embroidery, some knitting, even a little bit of sewing. All three of my kids were sick (again! sheesh!) so we were housebound. And the only nice thing about being housebound with three sick kids is the chance to catch up on my stitching!

Which, I have to say, wasn't so bad.

Vintage Crochet Baby Blanket

Do you think it's too late to work up one of these beauties for my one-year-old?

Technically she's still a baby, right, so she'd qualify to receive a baby blanket...

Oh wait! Actually, according to the pattern description, it's easy to "size up" which means I can make it a "toddler blanket" if I'm so inspired.

Well, if you happen to have a baby, toddler, kid, or grown-up loved one who could really use a simply gorgeous crochet blanket, I highly recommend this pattern. Not only are there several versions to choose from (I love that) but also (as the designers point out) the motif is sophisticated enough to work as a throw in any blanket-needing situation.

Well Hello There...

Long time no post! Sorry about that!

We were in Ohio for that wedding I had mentioned earlier, which was a lot of fun and kept everyone busy, busy, busy! On top of that, baby Norah caught a stomach flu and then very generously shared it with the family. Bah.

But we're all better now. Phew.

So, I am very lucky to know (cyber-wise, that is) Jenny and Angel, the two incredibly generous and caring women who write the blog Stumbles and Stitches. They are holding a raffle to raise money for the victims of the tornadoes a few weeks ago in the American Southeast. As many of you now know, the storms ravaged a number of southern states, destroying buildings, neighborhoods, and towns.

First Let's Talk About Hand-Painted Yarn

...And how much I love it.

Oh yes, I am a sucker for hand-painted yarn. What you see here is Koigu Painter's Palette Premium Merino (or KPPM for short). Which is dyed—by hand, mind you—in small batches for a gorgeous watercolor-y look when knit up.

But honestly, I even love it still in the skein. And what's more, it's finely spun merino, so it's as much a pleasure to knit as it is to look at.

And today I have the perfect pattern to go with this luscious yarn (ok, true, there are probably dozens of perfect patterns for a yarn like this, but here's one at any rate):

Peasant Raglan by Heirloom Stitches

Isn't that cute? It looks so summery to me. Something a lucky kid would wear on the beach or at the lake. I could even see making it with short or cap sleeves—perfect for early summer, late evenings, and back to school. And I haven't made one (yet) but I'd bet it's really easy, which is always nice! Hmm, maybe it would be something to knit from the comfort of your shaded beach chair...

So this is happy: two new patterns from Colette that are beginner-friendly. And adorable to boot!

Meet Violet:

A blouse with a peter pan collar that's designed for beginners? This is my kind of pattern! I still have that wedding sewing to do, but believe me, as soon as it's finished, I'm starting on this little beauty. In my opinion it's the perfect project for that Liberty of London fabric I've been drooling over for so long.

And how about this? I'm thinking I might try to pull off something like this for the collar:

We've got the preverbal lion and lamb of spring duking it out over here these days. One day mild and sunny and the next, gale force winds and hail. But no matter! Spring will eventually lead to summer and then we'll all need cute, warm weather clothes to wear. SO I've been surfing about, plotting the kids' summer wardrobe. Natural Patchwork

Just last week or so I spied this book and thought it would be something I would like very much.

And then it arrived in the mail!

The lovely folks at Shambala Publications, parent company of Make Good Crafts + Life, the publisher of this book, sent me a review copy.

How happy is that?

And although I haven't had a chance to make anything from it yet, here's what I know: I was right. I do like it very much. And, I had thought that the cute little patchwork thing on the cover was a lunchbag but in fact it's a tea cozy. Even better!

There are lots of cute patchwork projects in the book, and happily, this Japanese collection is translated (although the diagrams are so detailed, you might be able to put these lovelies together without instructions).

Two of the projects are available on the Make Good Life + Crafts web site for free, so pop over there to download the Tea Towel Tote Bag and the Yo-Yo Glasses Case patterns. They're both darling. And free is always lovely.

In the End I Made It Up

I started with a pattern in French, which as one reader helpfully pointed out before I started the project, gets a little funky in the larger sizes; decided to make some changes (beyond the sizing issues); looked to another pattern for inspiration; did a little adjusting on my own; and eventually just made the whole thing up.

But it worked out! So that's happy!

Here's what I wanted: a sleeveless spring dress for my seven-year-old that only buttoned in the yoke (not all the way down the back). So basically I used a sleeveless dress pattern, cut two front skirts instead of a front and two backs, and altered the back yoke so that the button bands worked out alright just buttoning from the skirt up.

It's a really simple style, so it wasn't too hard to figure out how to change things around (even for me!).

But the very best part of the dress, in my humble opinion, is that fabric! Don't you think? I bought it from This and That From Japan, via Etsy (along with a number of other goodies including a Japanese craft book I can't wait to dive into), to help support relief efforts there.

Seems like a nice way to welcome in spring...

We were browsing the library the other day, as we often do (particularly when the weather is less than inviting), and I spotted this book in the children's section:

Has anyone else seen this amazing book? Probably only crafty folks can truly appreciate how much work must have gone into these pages. All the scenes for the nursery rhymes are constructed with intricately sewn felt and sweetly painted faces.

The author, Salley Mavor, creates gorgeous, books, notecards, and limited edition dolls in her studio, Wee Folk Studio. You can order any of the above, or learn her secrets for creating her signature fairy dolls on her web site. I also noticed that there is a travelling exhibit of the original work for this book, so be sure to stop by your local library for me if it's coming to your area.

In fact, I've already started on the Family Reunion Dress for my seven-year-old, for the afore mentioned wedding. So far so good, but I'll keep you all posted as the project progresses.

So this is happy. It's time for major updates to the Magpie site. Yay!

Why, "yay!?" Well, first ask all the lovely stitchers who tried to download the super adorable Book Smart pattern this past week. {So sorry about that everyone!}

Then ask my husband about how much time I spend futzing with it just to get new patterns up or messing with the whacky shipping charges, or swearing at the computer when things aren't working the way I want them to. Bah.

And then there's the real reason {and the best one} which is: my little shop is kinda popular now! Yay! Yay! And there are a lot of things I had wanted to do for the site that just didn't fit into the budget the first go around (almost two years ago now—ack!).

Ok, so let me get to the point here. I would LOVE to know what you would like to see change. What would make the site work better for you? When you're browsing, what drives you nuts? Is there anything you wish you could do or information you wish was there or magic you wish could happen, but can't/isn't/doesn't right now?

We Are All in the Wedding

And how fun is that?

My husband's baby sister (who is now a fully mature 27) is getting married in a little more than a month (eek!) and our whole little family is in the wedding!

Hubs gets to look debonair in a tux and my sister-in-law has picked very stylish bridesmaid dresses, so I'm all set there (aside from the multitude of alterations I have to make as a result of badly timed weight loss—but that's another story). But she's left it up to each family to decide what to dress the kids in, with the only caveat being that they wear solid colors.

You see my opportunity, don't you?

Alright. So I was on a plane a couple days ago (unfortunately for unhappy reasons, not the sunny Spring break type of reasons most people board planes this time of year) and the most awesome vest walked past me as I sat with a squirmy and generally frustrated one year old on my lap.

If I had thought just a little faster I would have stopped the woman wearing the vest to ask where it had come from. But alas.

So, next best thing—I'll just make one. From memory.

Probably it would have been easier to just write out a pattern myself, but as you all know, I do love other people's patterns, so, to me at least, it made perfect sense to browse nearly every known resource for vest patterns in search of something similar to the one from the plane.

And while I can't say I found it (it looks like I'll end up writing my own pattern anyway), I had so much fun and found so many awesome vest patterns, I thought I'd share a few of my favorites.

Over the weekend we were able to raise $125 for relief funds for Japan! Much of which came from the sweet and wonderful Nicole of Follow the White Bunny, who brought a really darling pattern out of retirement for two short days and donated all of the proceeds to our fundraiser.

Messy Kid Bib...Sorta

How many of you have messy eaters at your house? Right. And how many of you actually use bibs? Right. I was one of those mamas who felt like bibs didn't really work. You know, they only protect that little bit of shirt underneath the bib, and sometimes baby even manages to get food there too. So I would either strip the babe down and let her/him eat in a diaper or just sigh and throw their clothes into the hamper (like six times a day).

Ok, well now I have three kids, so that doesn't really work anymore (if it ever did!). Enter the solution: the Messy Kid Bib from Little things to Sew. Large enough to cover the whole front of the baby! Now we're talking! I liked it right away.

However, I couldn't resist making a few changes to the pattern based on past experience, and lack of a few components.

First off I didn't have any velcro handy, which I wouldn't have used anyway. I can understand why parents like velcro on bibs (easy on) but in this house it also proves to be a minor problem (easy off!). The bibs with velcro tabs never stay on for long (we're talking seconds here). So I knew I wanted to go old school and used small snap on the first bib. When that also proved no match for a determined baby, I switched to buttons, which work like a charm.

And then there was the pocket. I know that they are supposed to collect stray bits of food, but at this stage in her life, Norah isn't about to be so limited. She's a thrower, so food ends up everywhere, rendering that cute little pocket useless. (A dog, on the other hand, would be a great asset around here.)

Ok then.

Next up: iron-on vinyl. Way cool. And although I'll probably use it for some other project, I decided against it here. Basically I figured it would be easier to just throw the bibs into the wash with the kitchen towels. I can completely see the argument against this plan, however, so feel free to pipe up and change my mind.

And finally, the super adorable binding. That I definitely would have done, but I was too impatient to make my own and didn't have anything cute on hand. So there you go.

She's still a messy kid, but at least her clothes are kept clean just that little bit longer.

2) I had everything I needed on hand, besides the iron-on vinyl and velcro (which didn't matter, since I couldn't resist making a few changes regarding just those two things anyway)
3) Sometimes I just love an easy-peasy project

I'll share my version of the Messy Kid Bib tomorrow {I had planned to feature new patterns all week, but the site is misbehaving; bah.}, complete with a messy kid to model just how effective this garment is!

For Book Lovers Everywhere

Books are a major part of our lives over here. Major. The librarians at our neighborhood library know me—and all of my kids—by name. We often have more than 100 books checked out at any given time (no joke!). {And I've been known to put books on hold using my husband's card when mine reaches the quite generous limit.} A bit of an obsession, true. But it's all good, right? Nothing wrong with a healthy love of books!

So, you can imagine how delighted I was by this super sweet new pattern set by SeptemberHouse:

Sending Love and Strength

Ugh, I just can't stop thinking about the tragedy in Japan. My heart just breaks for them. I know a lot of people feel the same way, and we are all looking for a way to send some kind of support, even if it's just water, blankets, and lots and lots of love.

So, in an attempt to help (even just a little), all weekend I'll be donating 25% of every sale to relief efforts in Japan through Mercy Corps.

Mercy Corps is a local organization with a great track record. They are working with Peace Winds in Japan to make sure that tsunami survivors have food, water, and shelter.

Some Last-Minute Sweaters

Playful Stripes by Never Not Knitting

Nana sent us some last minute sweaters this week, which I think is very, very sweet. Let me just say that my mom can knit like no one else (except for maybe my grandmother): fast and perfect.

This one is so super cute that I really, really hope it fits next year too. Otherwise the seven-year-old will wear it for a couple months (at best) and then we won't see it again for 5 more years. It's nice and long, so I just might get my wish.

The pattern only goes up to size 5 (I think) but Alana (the designer) recommended simply adding length, and it worked beautifully.

Well, it turns out that I was a tad early in declaring a full recovery for the young pirate. Not only has the poor guy been battling some yucky, drawn out cold-like flu thing for the past week, but he was kind enough to share it with the baby. So there you go.

Oh well.

Let's talk about inspiration instead of runny noses and gunky coughs! I have finally made lots and lots of progress on the craft room (thank you Ikea!) and I've been oh so happy to retreat there when all the little patients are resting. Spring is on its way and I've been thinking about dresses and such for the girls. Oliver + S has some new patterns coming out sooooon, but even I can't get my hands on them until April, so I thought I'd start with some of the old patterns while I wait. In Need of Labels

Ok. So, raise your hand if you are so organized that you put size labels in your handmade clothing. Gah! I'm so impressed! And, I would very much like to join your very-organized-handmade-clothing club!

Plus, I just think it's cute when mamas (or papas, no need to bow to stereotypes) put mama-labels (or papa-labels) in their kids' clothes. Like Dana from Made:

A bit like painting by numbers, I've been sewing by pictures. Ages and ages ago I ordered some super cute patterns from France and they've been sitting wistfully on my sewing table, not being sewn, since they arrived.

But a little break in the hectic routine gave me a chance to try one out. And it was a lovely little success!

This pattern is really simple, so if you have any sewing experience at all, it would all be fairly intuitive. I thought I might have to translate the instructions, but I didn't have to at all, which was nice.

I really like how the top turned out, so I'll probably make a bunch more, although I'll likely modify them a bit. The pattern has the back of the shirt almost entirely open, with only two buttons at the top, but I added buttons all down the back. Next time, though, I'll probably just have buttons on the yoke and make the back panel one piece, rather than two.

I might also try one with short sleeves. Summer will come one day, after all!

Hmm, sorry for that absence (right on the heels of proclaiming an end to the blogging hiatus even!) but our house, and in particular, our boy, was hit with the flu. So everything was off kilter for a few days.

But with the little buccaneer back to his hearty self, life is returning to normal once again (of course, that's a relative term, but let's not get into that now.)

While my little pirate was feeling a bit green about the gills I was able to—finally—make an attempt at learning to crochet. And let's just say it was a little wonky at first. Perhaps starting with the thinnest thread and itsy-bitsiest hook wasn't the wisest way to begin, but what can I say, it's what spoke to me.

In any case, with microscopic hook in hand I turned to Martha first, in particular this post and this post. Both of which were very helpful. As you may recall, it was this project that I planned to start with (also from Martha):

Which, I'm happy to say, is coming along nicely (given uninterrupted craft time or a life with fewer distractions than mine, this project could be completed in about hour—even with the learning curve).

So, in true craft-a-holic fashion, I've started looking for my next crochet project before actually finishing my first. Ah well. Here are a few things that caught my eye.

In the Nick of Time

Well, that was close! I finished the promised birthday dress oh, about 10 minutes before the birthday girl got home from school on Friday. Eek. But just look at how cute it turned out!

Everyone was happy, which is good on a birthday. Any day, really.

I used the Bettsy Kingston A la Belle Etoile pattern, which is very well written and easy to follow. I did have to make a few changes, however, so anyone using the pattern for the largest size (7), take note that the bodice was much too tight and had to be adjusted by about an inch on each side (essentially the width of the button band, or so).

The other thing I should have done was to add length to the dress. It's very cute as it is, with a sort of babydoll look, but my long-legged daughter (lucky duck, sadly for me she did not get that lovely trait from her mother) will grow out of it in no time.

{Happily, I have another daughter to hand it down to. So it's all good.}

In other news, I've got so many new patterns for the shop, and only one more birthday to celebrate this week, so there's a good chance I could get a few of them up. Yay!

There are two very important dates coming up around here. Very, very important. Just ask my soon-to-be seven year old. Indeed. It's birthday week!

My older daughter will be seven on Friday and my younger daughter will be one only five days later! So we will be par-t-ying, let me tell you!

And, in true crazy-mama fashion, I've been staying up late and getting up early to finish those handmade gifts that didn't get completed at Christmas so they could become birthday gifts. Which is why this week I'm inspired by handmade softies.

But these days, with three little chatterers in my house, it also makes me think of the long and winding stories my kids invent throughout the day—and in particular the stories baby Norah relates, which sound very much like squirrel chatter! Can't you just see that patient-mama look in the bear's eyes? Hmm, maybe I'm projecting... Anyway, it's a darling pattern, don't you think?

Justifying My Madness

I've always admired crafters who can start one project and finish it before starting another. Unfortunately for me, I've never been like that. So in this case, "Madness" refers to the number of projects I have in progress—which, no matter how many I finish, seems to remain about the same.

{Of course the real reason I continually start new projects is probably because I have so little self control when it comes to yarn (or fabric), but hopefully you'll be able to humor me while I go through the reasons I generally tell myself (ahem).}

I'll use knitting to demonstrate, but this could easily apply to sewing too.

The first reason: Like you, I'm really, really busy. Too busy to think sometimes. And whenever things get more hectic than I like (practically every day), all I can think about is sitting down with an easy knitting project. I obsessively, ridiculously, irrationally long for a moment to knit. I think this is because knitting can be so relaxing. Meditative, almost.

Meditatively Easy:

Pico Edged Baby Blanket and Washcloth

Reason two: something similar to the meditatively easy project is the "meeting project." That's anything that's easy enough to do during a large meeting of some sort where knitting isn't a distraction to the people around me or maybe during a play date where there are moments here and there to knit, but I know I'll have to put the project down a lot. Usually this is just about any project that is at a point where the knitting has gotten simple, even if there are other parts of the project that are more complicated.

The Current Meeting Project:

Reason three: Of course I have been knitting for nearly 20 years, so sometimes easy is just, well, too easy. So on those days when I've had more sleep the night before than usual, or a preschool meeting is suddenly canceled and I have an hour to myself, on those days something a little more complicated might be what I gravitate towards.

Reason four: Some projects we actually need. I often make more than one version of this kind of project, in several sizes or colors (or both).

Reason five: And then there are the projects I can't help but start because the pattern is just too darling. (There are quite a few of those.)

So, you know that feeling you get whenever you see something wonderful that you just know you could make?

Well, sometimes (ok, often) I get a similar feeling when I see something lovely that I wish I could make, but would need a pattern for. Does that ever happen to you?

Whenever it happens to me, and I'm really enamored with whatever it is that I've spied, I end up searching the globe for a pattern. (No need to wonder any longer how I got the idea to start this little shop, eh?) Which, lucky for me, I find enjoyable. If I were a little more daring I would probably learn how to write my own patterns. But honestly, I like for someone to figure it all out for me (despite having a terrible habit of altering patterns relentlessly).

So, all you designers out there, here are a few things I have my eye on that I would love to have a pattern for.

Sewing for Girls

Or at least sewing for one of my girls.

Has anyone else with school-age daughters found the clothing selection for the 7 - 12 set a little, um, appalling? Hmm.

Sure there are a few lines that offer styles that are more appropriate for young girls than others, but often we have to pay a premium to keep logos to a minimum, bums and tummies adequately covered, and color palettes in the range of the natural world.

This particular girl of mine is all about dresses and skirts. Which makes sewing for her so much fun. While our opinions about fabric differ (she doesn't have the same issues with neon pink that I do) and certain styles might appeal to one or the other of us more (I like simple, classic styles, she likes anything with lots of tulle), more often than not we can find something that we both like.

I've made several of the dresses from Carefree Clothes for Girls, with varying degrees of success. And Ofelia is a lovely, easy pattern. Any seamstress with a daughter has likely discovered Oliver + S's lazy days skirt (I've made so many of those I honestly don't know the final tally). And I love their Music Box Jumper pattern, which I've used several times now.

But this week I'm venturing into new territory. And I'm really excited.

Awhile ago I ordered a bunch of patterns from the French company, Citronillle, knowing full well that the patterns were not translated. And that I don't speak French. At all.

No matter. The patterns are simply too darling and I am just ridiculous enough to give them a try anyway. {Despite the astronomical shipping rates from France.}

It seems worth it to me, you know? Choosing what our kids wear rather than being at the mercy of manufacturers. Of course this whole business of buying patterns in a foreign language, I can see how that may be getting a bit carried away. But then, that's part of the fun, right?

Anyway, if there are any of you non-French residents who do speak French, or are as ridiculous as me and don't care if you can actually read the instructions, and would be interested in seeing these patterns stocked in the shop, please let me know!

Looking Forward to Spring

Isn't that always the case in January? {And even more so in February.} Once the fun of the holidays is officially over, I'm suddenly ready for winter to pass and spring to begin.

Since I can do little to hasten the seasons (except for employing a little travel magic with a trip to say, Mexico or Hawaii, which for some inexplicable reason I can't get my husband to sign onto...crazy man) I'm going to let Polka + Bloom bring spring into the house. Lately (ok, for a long, long time) I've been coveting a little Liberty of London fabric. There are only two issues. The first is that I can't decide which pattern I love most (see below for a visual demonstration of my dilemma):

Two New Lovlies

It's more knitting today, which is always a good thing in my book. I've got two new patterns by Elena Rosenberg in the shop this morning. And they're a couple of beauties.

Victoriana Scarfette

Isn't that Victoriana Scarfette just elegant? It would be so lovely under a classy wool coat, wouldn't it? I love the floral details on the ties, so pretty!

And the Meringue Scarf, well that just says "spring" to me—although you could certainly wear it all year. I have some scrumptious, bright blue Malabrigo yarn that was supposed to be part of a shawl (but just didn't end up fitting the part) that would be perfect for this pattern. Hmm...

Piratey Stripes

Despite the fact that I used one of the most luscious yarns on earth (Cascade Yarn's Eco Alpaca) I simply couldn't convince the four-year-old to wear his completely awesome (if I do say so myself) gray, stripey sweater.

Until I called the stripes "Pirate stripes."

Nevermind that pirates tend to wear their stripes on their socks. This pirate wears them on his sweaters.

I used the Heirloom Stitches Britt pattern, which is knit top down in one piece, making it great for stripes. And using my typical two-row stripe pattern, there weren't too many ends to weave in (my very least favorite part about knitting).

I haven't knit him a cardigan since he was tiny. I knit them for the girls all the time, so it's a mystery why this is his first one in three years. In any case, it's such a great pattern and I'm particularly happy with the piratey stripes.

{As an unrelated side note, any other young pirate fans out there should check out the tunes by the swashbuckling Captain Bog and Salty, a local band that has a hearty following. It's pretty much a constant at our house, and has the whole family chanting "Eat a lime!" on a regular basis.}

Isn't it though? I love the details. I think just the right details make a sweater. This version looks feminine to me but it would be so easy to make it perfect for a boy (I would just leave off the picot edge).

She only has it sized up to 8 years, so I can't make one for myself, but I would if I could. (And if I didn't already have so many other projects started, of course. Ahem.)

Look for more patterns by this talented French designer in the future. She has a bunch more that I have my eye on that are currently only available in French. But she assures me that she'll be translating them soon...

Well, despite my bold statements earlier, I haven't made a lick of progress on my craft room. In fact, it's very possible that it's in worse shape. {I've been busy. What can I say?}

However, I have learned something about myself that might come in handy when I do—finally—get around to organizing and decorating my craft space.

This pattern. I tell ya. I know, I'm a bit of a pattern enthusiast, so I'm prone to this reaction, but this pattern by Cécile Levesque makes me want to stop what I'm doing and knit one of these little cuties up.

Alright, it's true that I have thing for pinafores right now and that could explain my irresistible urge to start this project immediately. But that's ok, right? I mean honestly, is there anything cuter than a little girl in a pinafore (knit or sewn)?

Plus this one has that natural folksy look I just love (kind of a Zakka thing, don't you think?). You know I'll be at the yarn shop before the end of the day. I'm hopeless.

A Friendly Companion

I'm reading a very friendly little book right now that is due out this March. A Knitter's Home Companion is a charming collection of patterns, recipes, and stories and is somehow reminiscent of some of my favorite—but largely unrelated—books like The Plain Reader and Animal, Vegetable, Miracle: A Year of Food Life. Maybe it's the combination of heartwarming anecdote and careful instruction or perhaps the quiet emphasis on the beauty of something so simple (and yet profound) as knitting, homemaking, and community.

The patterns (without color images) are so sweet and simple—but so perfect!—that I'm reminded of Elizabeth Zimmermann's patterns. Common sense, straightforward, no-tears knitting that result in something cherished for years.

In fact, can I just offer this completely fabulous Elizabeth Zimmerman quote, which kind of sums up this lovely little book (and is found heading up the last chapter)?

Knitting is formed by a series of loops pulled through loops to the end of time or to "desired length"... Be grateful for this and don't expect any more. (from Knitter's Almanac)

I love that because really, isn't the rhythm and comfort of knitting a perfectly lovely thing to be grateful for? And how wise to just love the process without any expectations beyond it (such as, say, a perfect garment).

Of course I'll try a pattern or two (maybe the Trio of Lacy Washcloths, and definitely the Chicken Egg Warmer) and I might even test out a recipe (probably Aunt Charlotte's "You Won't Believe How Easy It Is to Make" Jam). But mostly I'm enjoying the stories Michelle Edwards offers with each pattern or instruction. They're so warm and friendly I really do feel like I'm sitting with a friend while we knit. It's lovely and a joy. Just what you want out of any kind of companion, don't you think?

Well, with knitting on my mind, I simply can't resist leaving you with a picture of my latest love. I did my best but I'm afraid this muted Pacific Northwest winter light combined with my lack of photography experience just don't do this red justice. But oh, she's still lovely I'd say.

So I went to the yarn store last night and fell in love.

But what doesn't normally happen—and did this time—was that I went with a pattern in mind (Georgia by Jane Richmond), walked right up to a gorgeous shade of red (Scarlet) on the awe-inspiring Madelinetosh wall, picked up three skeins (they're big; 440 yards each), and was ready to go.

Um, what?

Generally, my "quick" trips to the yarn store are at minimum 45 minutes.

But what can I say? It was love at first sight. Reds are really tricky—or at least I'm really picky about reds—so when I saw this absolutely perfect red in the right weight...well, why look any further?

{Full disclosure: Ok, I did browse for another 10 minutes. But just for fun.}

Too bad I was so proud of my speediness that I forgot to have the yarn wound. Did I mention each skein is 440 yards? Oh well.

Can you believe that rug was meant to be walked on? Are artisans intense or what? We just want handmade beauty to be everywhere—even under our feet!

I'm definitely feeling stitchy, but I seriously doubt I'll try to tackle a rug. But something like that cake, now that's another story...

I Have an Idea...

Can I just tell you how often I say that? A lot. A friend of mine and I used to joke that our perfect job would be to come up with ideas. Just that. Sit around and think of fun things to do, try, or make. Wouldn't that be so great?

Ok, well this particular idea came to me after reading this post on Soulemama and then browsing through my own photos of things I've made this year. I'd bet that you'd be surprised by how many wonderful things you've made if you counted. I was.

Lots of felt barrettes

A bunch of sweaters - some with flowers even!

Several hats (of varying degrees of popularity)

Many, many reversible pinafores (my new favorite thing)

Not to mention bags, blankets, dolls, dresses, skirts, pants, robes, and mittens! No wonder I'm so busy. Sheesh!

But here's the thing. I've made all of these lovely things to be worn, loved and used by children (and, on occasion, adults). Children who love dirt and paint and animals. Children who grow really, really fast (much too fast if you ask me). In other words, even we're all really careful, not many of these lovelies will be around to admire once they've been used to their fullest potential. A few maybe, but certainly not the lot.

Another pinafore...

So I was thinking, wouldn't it be nice to have a record of some kind of all these lovely things? Sure, when I'm old and gray I could browse through all the (millions of) photos I will have taken during my lifetime, finding a jumper here and a pair of super easy baby pants there. But even in my imagination that seems rather daunting.

But what if I had a project photo album? Once a year, using some nifty photo program like Kodak Gallery, Lulu, or Picaboo, I could collect photos of all my crafty projects into a book. Something tells me that if I did, whenever I felt like I had gotten absolutely nothing accomplished that day, or that I never had time for crafts, I could pull out the previous year's book and feel a whole lot better.

Isn't that a good idea?

A Photo Collection Titled, "No, no, no, no Baby!"

Does anyone else do that? Put something on your 10-month-old baby in order to take a picture and then spend the whole time saying, "No, no baby!" as they try to take said object off?

Yeah.

So this little collection should be titled something like, "The Cute Hat I Knit for Norah While I was Still Pregnant" or "A Highly Modified Version of Pixie Cap from Vintage Baby Knits" but instead it's called, "No, no, no, no Baby!"

The funny thing is, once she got it off, all she wanted to do was try to put it back on!

Oh well. It's still a cute hat, even if I can't get the baby to wear it!

Just a Hunch

There's a new designer in the shop this morning, and although I have several patterns of hers to add, so far all I've had time for is The Hunch.

I Just Might Be Making an Impression After All

Around here, men sew. Or at least according to my four-year-old son they do (my husband can sew, probably better than me, but he doesn't do it very often). Which I think is pretty cool. And what's more, they bake, make jewelry, and knit with knitting needles (again, according to my little bruiser). So ok, I've got that kid hooked, no problem, he was pretty much born the crafty type.

But my six-year-old is another story. Her passion is books. She has little interest in the sewing machine her nana bought her a couple years ago, the cute, pink embroidery hoop or any of the vibrant floss I stocked the craft bin with. Nor yarn, nor fabric in any form. This, however, does not bother me (I have the four-year-old hooked, as I mentioned, so it's cool).

Yesterday, however, I felt a little jolt of joy when she screeched with delight at the sight of a book on cd I brought home from the library. She had already read the story but was really excited to hear it again because it is one of her "very, very favorites."

It's entirely possible that I'm reading too much into this but this story centers around a fabric shop! There's sewing in it! I mean, the girls in the story (and their grandmothers) sew!

Ok, maybe that has absolutely nothing to do with why she likes it, but I'll take it. And for any of you who have reading age kids (I'd say anywhere from 6 - 11 on this one), this is a great series (at least the parts I've heard so far).

Feeling Inspired!

There are so many lovely, lovely pictures of really gorgeous spaces, but I'm now trying to be somewhat realistic. (Notice that I'm aiming for somewhat realistic, not wholly realistic, because how much fun would that be?)

As much as I wish I had an unlimited budget and a raw—but super awesome—space to transform, I don't. But I do have a somewhat cool, marginally finished, and under-utilized attic, a lot of motivation, and I'm crafty! So that's something, right?

A Couple New Patterns

...from one of my favorite places on the planet. Granted, I have quite a number of favorite places on the planet, but I can confidently count Churchmouse Yarn and Teas on Bainbridge Island as one of them. There are many, many reasons to love Bainbridge Island (about 30 minutes west of Seattle), and one of mine was recounted in this post. But another really good reason is because the folks at Churchmouse are so nice, which is something I really, really like. But then, who doesn't?
