This week's book is by the super fabulous Betz White:
Oh how I love this book. Anyone who combines environmental common sense with adorable sewing patterns is speaking my language!
"By its nature, do-it-yourself sewing is environmentally friendly. In Sewing Green, Betz White takes stitching to an even higher level of sustainability, presenting 25 projects made from "repurposed" thrift-store and back-of-the-closet finds and organic fabrics. White’s whimsical yet practical designs include an apron constructed from men’s dress shirts (and a wallet from the shirts’ cuffs!), a soft blanket pieced from secondhand cashmere sweaters, and even a tote bag refashioned from used Tyvek envelopes. Along the way, White dispenses tips on everything from how to deconstruct old garments for reuse in new creations to how to wrap gifts with resusable fabric scraps instead of paper. Inspiring profiles about well-known leaders in the eco-stitching movement are sprinkled throughout, and a complete resources section helps crafters make eco-smart choices. With Sewing Green, today’s sewers will be fashioning handmade heirlooms and sustaining traditions for generations to come."
Ok, so here's a little reminder about how to win this very awesome book:
- Sometime today before 10 pm leave a comment with a green sewing tip you've read about, tried, or considered.
- Tweet (or retweet) about the giveaway—with the all important @magpiepatterns mention so that I know to include you in the drawing.
- Or share something from the Magpie Patterns Facebook page with your FB friends (and then send me a note so I know that you did!).
- And a new one this week: become a follower of the blog (and send me a note or something so I know).
After all the entries are in I'll randomly choose a winner, definitely using Rae's rather successful toddler method (although mine's a preschooler, it still worked out great last time) and then contact that person by email, twitter, or Facebook (so be sure to include a method of contact) to get shipping digits.
Good luck and happy sewing!

Happy Anniversary!! (Today is my 30th wedding anniversary!) My favorite 'green' sewing is make grocery bags from fabric that I love. I never forget my bags in the car and it's fun to see people's reaction to them.
I repurpose fabric from old clothing...it's cheap & I get to see my favorite prints in something I've sewn. Thanks for the giveaway!

I'm a new follower! Great blog! I recently made a pillowcase out of scrap fabric left over from my quilt.
I like to turn my daughter's too-small jeans into a purse (cut off the legs, sew the bott together, line it and add handles). It makes a great birthday party gift for her friends, one that's sure to be unique.

That sounds like a wonderful book, and I would love to enter this giveaway! I follow your blog, and just tweeted about your giveaway.
As for "green sewing" - I like to reuse/recycle found fabric or old clothes, and develop my skills by turning them into nicer things.
Happy blog anniversary! I'm a new follower!
Oh, I'd love this book!
Well, people have been giving me their old, unwanted ikea curtains and I've been using them for making fabric baskets, shopping bags and most recently, a travel diaper change pad for a baby shower gift. I'm staring to feel a little like Maria from The Sound of Music!
(btw, I'm a blog follower too! And love it :-)

Congrats on your first year! I make clever tote bags out of the old hardcover cases from books. I'm a bookbinder/repairer and it's a great way to recycle old books. It folds shut so you can carry it like a book and opens up into a very sturdy tote bag!
I found a site that list eco-friendly sewing podcasts. You can listen while you sew!

Thanks for the chance and Happy anniversary!!!
Of course I RT'd on twitter :) Shame I can't win the book though! But sending pdf's is much 'greener' so that's ok. I must admit that my 'green' sewing is rather limited but I do sometimes use old duvet covers as quilt backings/bindings!
What I lovely giveaway I (@makedoandsend) just tweeted it to all my followers :)
I often reuse fabric from old or thrifted clothing. Fun giveaway!
Is it green to make clothes for your baby out of some of your old clothes? I did that years ago before I knew it was green.
I have made purses out of old wool sweaters that I felted in the washing machine, then I needle felt designs to spiffy up each purse.

i never throw out or give away old clothes until i think through some of the possibilities of what can be made from them. that sweater i shrunk? that could make a great fabric for a stuffed animal one day!
re-purposing materials - sheets, sweaters, and even picking up embroidery supplies at estate sales. : ) thanks for the giveaway!
I like to save scraps to use as stuffing. I have made a few cat toys that needed stuffing, and it worked out perfectly!
Thanks for the chance to win this book...I think it looks really good!

i love to buy old sweaters and make them into cloth diaper covers. :)
There are so many "green tricks" from Soulemama's reusing sheets to make picnic blankets, turning my favorite parts of old tees (especially the ones that my kids have outgrown, but that I still love) into pillows and little doll quilts. There is so much to do- still I can always use some inspiration:).
I am like so many of the others, in that I re-use a lot of the existing fabric/clothing in our house for new items. I am new to sewing and still find fabric shops more overwhelming than tempting...unlike the wool shop.
Looks like a beautiful book! I recently made some beautiful scarves, by recycling sweaters and felting the wool. Nice way to use what you've got. Being resourceful is part of the fun :)

I like to make reusable grocery bags from old t-shirts.
Happy Anniversary!
I joined as a follower. I recon clothing all the time and reuse everything I can for making something else. I save my all my "floor sweeping" size bits of small fabric scraps and even thread tails, etc in a garbage bag in a chest, and then use these for stuffing pillowforms and other things sometimes, too. They make a nice heavy pillow, plenty soft for sofa cushions.
